A major U.S. university constructed a $156 million expansion of its athletics facilities. The design-build contractor retained Rimkus as its building envelope consultant for this fast-track project.

  • Western US
  • Stadium/Sports Arena
  • Educational, Sports Facilities

Background:

The project consisted of an addition to the main stadium and an all-new indoor practice building adjacent to the stadium. The addition was a six-story, 200,000 SF structure in the northeast corner of the stadium, housing athletics department offices and training facilities for the football team. The 120,000 SF indoor practice facility serves the football and track teams, and included two-stories of underground parking.

Rimkus joined the team near the beginning of design. Both buildings were designed to be consistent with the University’s signature style, consisting of ashlar veneer sandstone walls with limestone trim, and clay tile roofs. The envelope for the addition was constructed of steel studs, gypsum sheathing, and both rigid and fiberglass batt insulation. The envelope for the Indoor Practice facility was constructed of precast panels and rigid insulation.

Services / Solutions Provided:

  1. Consultation with the Architects. In-person meetings were conducted with the architects to refine and improve building envelope details.
  2. Document Review. Detail-by-detail reviews of construction drawings and specifications were performed for continuity of air and vapor barriers, liquid water management properties, and for constructability.
  3. Transient Hygrothermal Computer Modeling. Entire wall assemblies were modeled to assess the vapor transmission through various materials within them.
  4. Mock-up Reviews. On-site reviews of wall mock-ups were performed for quality of workmanship
