Background

This project provided the owner with a 21st century complex of research laboratories and microchip manufacturing facilities focusing on the development of “smart” micro machines for both peacetime and defense applications. During the initial construction stages of the project Rimkus served as a civil construction management engineer for the owner, overseeing the upgrading and expansion of laboratory utility systems to support the new complex of high technology buildings.

SERVICES / SOLUTIONS PROVIDED:

Rimkus professionals assisted in managing the contract with the utility contractor from both the technical and financial aspects. In particular the Rimkus construction management engineer responsibilities included the following:

  1. Review construction drawings for quality and constructability.
  2. Develop process controls for the construction phases.
  3. Oversee quality control function during the initial construction phase by interfacing with Quality Control inspectors and resolving problems.

Uncertainties regarding existing in-ground infrastructure were particularly challenging on this project; however, despite several surprises, the new utility construction was completed on time and within budget.
